Mumbai Airport to Shut Both Runways for Six Hours on November 19 for Maintenance
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will shut both runways for six hours on November 19, 2026. Find out the maintenance schedule, affected runways and how the airport is preparing for the temporary closure.
The scheduled maintenance is part of the airport’s year-round operational readiness programme, aimed at maintaining runway safety, reliability and compliance with global aviation standards.
The maintenance exercise will involve detailed runway inspections, surface repairs and technical assessments of runway lighting, markings and drainage systems. These activities form part of the airport’s post-monsoon maintenance plan to assess and address infrastructure requirements following the rainy season.
MIAL has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) in advance to inform airlines and other aviation stakeholders about the temporary runway closure. Coordination with airlines and relevant stakeholders began six months ahead of the scheduled maintenance to facilitate flight schedule adjustments and manpower planning.
The advance communication is intended to minimise passenger inconvenience and allow operational teams to coordinate requirements during the closure period.
CSMIA operates with a unique cross-runway configuration, with its two runways handling nearly 1,000 air traffic movements (ATMs) daily. The airport handled 55.29 million passengers in FY2025-26, according to information provided by MIAL.
Spread across approximately 1,900 acres, the airport serves as a key aviation, cargo and logistics hub for Mumbai. Its infrastructure includes one of India’s largest air cargo terminals, which handles more than 0.85 million metric tonnes of cargo annually.
MIAL is a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), with AAHL holding a 74 per cent stake.
The annual maintenance programme forms part of the airport operator’s efforts to maintain airside infrastructure and ensure safe airport operations. The temporary runway closure will provide technical teams with the opportunity to carry out scheduled inspections and maintenance activities, supporting the airport’s operational readiness and infrastructure reliability.
